RBT - Congressional Call Storm & Round Table Discussion

Join us on June 15th at UNYP as we discuss residency based taxation and Democrats Abroad's campaign to push for its acceptance. We will:

  • discuss the campaign and what RBT means to Americans abroad
  • review talking points in a round table discussion
  • write letters and postcards
  • call our Members of Congress

The 115th Congress has a goal of introducing a comprehensive tax reform package.  It's impossible to know whether the Trump government will settle down long enough to enable the Congress to focus on tax reform but Democrats Abroad isn't sitting around waiting.  
Since our inception Democrats Abroad has supported a shift from our current system of Citizenship Based Taxation (US citizens taxed on their worldwide income) to a system of Residency Based Taxation (or RBT) in which we would report only our US source income to the IRS and not the income we generate abroad. We believe we have an opportunity now to push our elected officials to recognise the problems that tax filing and reporting cause Americans abroad and include RBT in the tax reform package.  And we need your help to maximize the impact of our campaign.
A final important note.  While we would be delighted to see Congress build RBT into its tax reform package, our support for any package of tax reforms will hinge on whether it aligns with our Democratic Party values.  We will support common sense reforms that clarify and simplify filing and make the tax code fairer for all Americans.  We will not support reforms that re-structure the federal government by starving programs that are important to national, community or individual well-being.  The provisions of the tax package must help reduce inequality, boost opportunity and raise revenue predominantly from those with the greatest ability to pay.
