DAGR Kafeneion: #ABlackWomanToldMe

DAGR Kafeneion: #ABlackWomanToldMe

On Juneteenth 2024, DAGR's virtual Kafeneion features Renè Syler - barrier-breaking US broadcaster, media all-rounder, gifted public speaker, and creator of the soon-to-be-launched podcast, #ABlackWomanToldMe.

In her new podcast, René shares life stories she has been told by, as she puts it, “amazing Black women I have met. I really wanted to do this podcast as a roadmap for younger women like my daughter." During our Kafeneion, though, René is offering an opportunity for straight talk from and with a Black woman about the “elephant in the room” so many people continue to downplay, avoid, or deny: racism. First, she’ll share from her personal and professional perspectives on and experiences with racism in the USA, its underlying role in the MAGA movement, and the ongoing (and increasing) GOP-led efforts to erase, whitewash, distort and even ban Black History.

Then it’s our turn to share experiences, reflections, and any topical questions or concerns with René and each other. “We have to have these conversations about racism,” René recently told the DAGR Kafeneion team – and this online event on Juneteenth 2024 is a chance to do just that!

Learn more about René’s journey below and RSVP today for #ABlackWomanToldMe  -  a timely, important, and insightful Kafeneion that promises to be an evening you don’t want to miss.

About René Syler

René Syler knew she wanted a career in television. Unfortunately she did not come to that realization until after she had spent thousands of dollars on a degree in psychology. She forged ahead and after reporter/anchor jobs in Reno, Birmingham and Dallas, landed a plum assignment as one of the hosts of The Early Show on CBS.

It was there, René capitalized on her natural curiosity. She interviewed former First Lady Laura Bush, both in-studio and at The White House. She spoke with politicians such as the late Senator John McCain, Senator John Kerry, and countless authors, Jeffrey Deaver and Walter Mosely among her many favorites.

In her four years at The Early Show, she delved into the lives of actors Russell Crowe, Jennifer Lopez, Tom Selleck, Antonio Banderas, Denzel Washington, Beyoncé and Will Smith to name a few. She danced with American Idol winner Fantasia, even giving her the blue shoes off her own feet after Fantasia complimented her on them!

Alas she was not particularly adept at the cooking segments, which will come as no surprise to those who know her.

René’s book Good Enough Mother: The Perfectly Imperfect Book of Parenting, was published by Simon Schuster and from there, her website, www.goodenoughmother.com was born. René hosted Sweet Retreats, which highlights vacation homes for rent airing on The Live Well Network and spent several seasons as host of Exhale on Magic Johnson’s Aspire Network. René is the daughter of two breast cancer survivors. Her parents’ diagnoses and her own pre-cancerous condition led to her preventive mastectomy in 2007, a surgery that was profiled on The Oprah Winfrey Show. That experience also ignited her passion as she now travels the country as an ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, spreading the word about early detection and treatment of the disease. René was also awarded the prestigious Gracie Allen award for her television series on breast cancer.

René went back to work full time a year ago with a company called Tyler New Media. Her role is as manager of their streaming network called The Convo. In this exciting new position, she is able to use every single skill learned in her career over the past 3 decades. She conceptualizes, produces, writes, and directs shows for the network. Tyler New Media is a company owned by Ronnie and Lamar Tyler who are committed to educating and coaching Black business owners who many times do not traditionally have exposure to the nuts and bolts of business building, scaling etc.
