Americans in Greece remember former U.S. President Jimmy Carter
ATHENS, 30 December 2024 – The Executive Committee and membership of Democrats Abroad Greece join millions of our fellow Americans in mourning the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
Carter was one of the most significant humanitarians of our time, and we are proud to call him a member of the Democratic Party. He sought tolerance where there was conflict and unity where there was division. He was among the first to recognize that poverty and inequality were threats to international peace that would outlast the Cold War.
The foreign policy of the Carter Administration sought to restore respect for America as a proponent of democratic values in Latin America, the Middle East, and elsewhere. His personal integrity made him an effective broker of the Camp David Accords. After his presidency, he continued to work on repairing the damage of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus while restoring America’s historic friendship with post-dictatorship Greece.
He was distinguished above all by a deep commitment to the ideal of service, and he understood that the American Dream was realized through its sacrifices, including the Marshall Plan, the Peace Corps, and the opportunities created for refugees and political exiles to seek shelter and a better life. He will always be remembered as a champion of Habitat for Humanity, and as an advocate and observer of fair elections throughout the world.
Today we need the example of his leadership more than ever, and we will never forget him.

ΕΝΗΜΕΡΩΤΙΚΟ: Οι Αμερικανοί πολίτες στην Ελλάδα θυμούνται τον Τζίμι Κάρτερ
ΑΘΗΝΑ, 30 Δεκεμβρίου 2024 – Η Εκτελεστική Επιτροπή και τα μέλη του Democrats Abroad Greece ενώνονται με εκατομμύρια Αμερικανούς συμπολίτες μας στο πένθος για τον θάνατο του πρώην Πρόεδρος των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών Τζίμι Κάρτερ.
Ο Κάρτερ ήταν ένας από τους σημαντικότερους φιλάνθρωπους της εποχής μας, τον οποίο είμαστε υπερήφανοι που αποκαλούμε μέλος του Δημοκρατικού κόμματος. Αναζήτησε την ανοχή όπου υπήρχε αντίθεση και ενότητα όπου υπήρχε διχασμός. Ήταν από τους πρώτους που αναγνώρισε ότι η φτώχεια και η ανισότητα ήταν απειλές για τη διεθνή ειρήνη που θα διαρκέσουν πέρα από τον Ψυχρό Πόλεμο.
Η εξωτερική πολιτική της κυβέρνησης Κάρτερ προσπάθησε να αποκαταστήσει τον σεβασμό για την Αμερική ως υπέρμαχος των δημοκρατικών αξιών στη Λατινική Αμερική, τη Μέση Ανατολή και αλλού. Η προσωπική του ακεραιότητα τον έκανε αποτελεσματικό μεσολαβητή των Συμφωνιών του Καμπ Ντέιβιντ. Μετά από την θητεία του, συνέχισε να εργάζεται για την αποκατάσταση των ζημιών από την τουρκική εισβολή στην Κύπρο και την αποκατάσταση του φιλελληνισμού στην Αμερική.
Διακρίθηκε με μια βαθιά δέσμευση στο ιδεώδες της υπηρεσίας και κατάλαβε ότι το αμερικανικό όνειρο πραγματοποιήθηκε με τις θυσίες του, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του Σχεδίου Μάρσαλ, του Ειρηνευτικού Σώματος και των ευκαιριών που δημιουργήθηκαν σε πρόσφυγες και πολιτικούς εξόριστους να αναζητήσουν καταφύγιο και καλύτερη ζωή. Θα τον θυμόμαστε πάντα ως πρωταθλητή του Habitat for Humanity και ως υποστηρικτή και παρατηρητή δίκαιων εκλογών σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Σήμερα χρειαζόμαστε το παράδειγμα της ηγεσίας του περισσότερο από ποτέ, και δεν θα τον ξεχάσουμε ποτέ.
