Films for Fighting Fascism: DA Film Club #1 (The Battle of Algiers) - Geraz do Lima Showing

Films For Fighting Fascism: DA Film Club #1 (The Battle of Algiers) – Geraz do Lima Showing

Join us for our inaugural DA Films Against Fascism Film Club. We are following the curriculum from film professor Dr. Shannon Mancus, who studies pop culture and politics in the US. This is a 12-film series, crafted like a college course in 4 organized units designed to spark thought and discussion in specific areas. Our first movie will be "The Battle of Algiers" from Unit 1: Learning to See, How Power Introduces Itself.

We request that attendees prepare for the movie (homework, already?!?!) by reading/watching Dr. Mancus' article giving context for the film, which you can find on her Substack page https://substack.com/home/post/p-184719793 and reviewing the decoder for the film prior to our watch party here: https://substack.com/home/post/p-184820934.

Your "homework" should only take about 30 minutes.

You'll find the original syllabus with tons of background information here https://substack.com/home/post/p-184352811, but note - we are doing this as a self-guided group, instead of studying with Dr. Mancus. If we are lucky, we might convince her to chat with our group by video at the end of our 12-movie journey.

Our first viewing will have two locations (showing the film simultaneously) to accommodate as many members as possible: **this listing is for the Geraz do Lima event; there is a separate event listing on our events page for the simultaneous event in Estorãos. (When you RSVP, please be sure you are responding to the location of the event that you want to attend.)**

Please note: we will be meeting in person to watch and discuss 12 different movies. We fully expect that some people won't be able to make it for all of them, and have established a Slack discussion channel. Please join the Slack channel for information and discussion:  https://filmsforfighting.slack.com/ssb/redirect

You can watch the movies with the group, at your leisure at home (links below), or even send them to friends and family abroad or in the US, to participate in the community-building and insightful discussions that we anticipate having together.

Pop some corn and let's follow along together!
