Navigating the 2023 US/French Tax Filing Process

 Navigating French US Tax

It’s that time of year again when Americans around the world start getting nervous about taxes. As many of you know, the US is one of only two countries (the other being Eritrea) that tax their citizens on their worldwide income, no matter where they live. So many questions arise:

  • I already pay taxes in France. Do I really have to pay US tax, too?
  • Where is my “fiscal residence”?
  • Isn’t April 15th the filing deadline? Will I have to file a US tax return before I’ve completed the French one?
  • I heard I’m supposed to declare my foreign bank account(s). How do I do that?
  • What if I never filed before but was supposed to? Is there any kind of amnesty available?
  • Does voting from abroad expose me to US taxes?

To help answer these and other questions and put your mind at ease (or at least lower your stress level), the Democrats Abroad Lyon chapter will be holding a Zoom-based tax seminar on the evening of March 2nd featuring Jonathan Hadida, a tax lawyer licensed with the NY bar and founder of Hadida Tax Advisors, a firm specializing in assisting Americans living in France. Jonathan will be joined by Robert Levitt, founder of Levitt Capital Management and a licensed financial advisor in France, who will speak briefly about how tax treaties can be advantageous for Americans living in France. We plan to hold a follow-up seminar with Robert on taxation of investments. These events are geared specifically to US citizens with French tax liabilities.

We will be asking for a small $10 donation for attending the live seminar, or $5 for a follow-up recording. You can make a donation here.

As soon as you RSVP, you should receive a confirmation email with the zoom link as well as a link to ask your questions in advance of the seminar. There will also be a live chat box. Of course, we can’t guarantee that all questions will be addressed.

The tax seminar will be preceded by a short Meet and Greet by members running for local board elections.
