Memorial Day Florence American Cemetery and Lunch in Central Florence later
RSVP
In honor of Memorial Day, we are planning to attend the memorial service at the Florence American Cemetery which is located on the Via Cassia, just past Tavernuzze. As many of you may know, this moving 70 acre site was dedicated in 1960 as the final resting place of 4,932 American military members who died during fighting in Italy during World War II. The Cemetery also honors the 1.409 people who went missing in action during that war.
The memorial service begins at 10:58 AM sharp and should last for about an hour. The gates will close at 11, so no late arrivals will be permitted.
If anyone is interested and has a car and would be willing to offer rides, please let us know asap so that we can try to organize some carpools. Otherwise, we are thinking of taking taxis out there and reserving cabs to come back as well. There is a public bus service, but our trial run indicated that the bus could be a bit tricky as the service is very limited. If you are interested in the bus, however, you’d need to take a SITA bus departing from the Piazzale Vittorio Veneto near the Porta al Prato tram stop. The bus needs to be a local service that goes down the Via Cassia.
For anyone interested, we can head back to Florence and grab some lunch together at Caffe Petrarca which is a very informal place just outside the Porta Romana.
