In Hamburg, during the weekend of February 23rd, Democrats Abroad Germany hosted its 2018 Annual General Meeting. With over 100 members attending from across all ten chapters and twenty-three precincts, a major focus of the weekend was getting out the vote for upcoming midterm elections among our membership and the importance of electing Democrats at all levels.
To highlight this theme, Saturday evening’s gala dinner featured a keynote address from Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) National Development Director, Josh Handelman. He has served in this position since January of 2017. Preceding his current role, Josh has served on the finance teams of five U.S. Senate campaigns and was most recently the National Finance Director for Katie McGinty's U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania - ultimately the most expensive Senate race in history. He was previously National Finance Director for U.S. Senator Brian Schatz's successful 2014 election campaign in Hawaii.
Pulling from his campaign experience and current role, Josh underscored the importance of state houses in our national political landscape across the spectrum. State legislature impact spans from their responsibility of drawing congressional district lines following the 2020 census, to their roles of passing laws which have a direct impact on day to day life of their constituents. Handelman also spoke of current national news topics such as court review of state-level gerrymandering, especially of note in the PA and NC maps.
The DLCC recruits, trains, and supports local Democrats running for state legislative office. They lend candidates resources, field support, and the data they need to run smart, winning campaigns. To learn more about DLCC activities and how you can support them, visit http://www.dlcc.org

Owen Jappen published DAG Chapters Prepare for Annual AGM Fundraising Raffle in News 2017-03-28 03:22:37 -0400
Each year during its Annual General Meeting, DA Germany Chapters prepare baskets, trips, and items characteristic of their region to donate as raffle items. DAG is excited to announce that this year will be no exception! Items this year range from Oktoberfest tent tickets, or local chocolates and wines, to stays at DA Members’ homes across Germany with tours of the nearby attractions. All bid proceeds go directly to DA Germany’s “Get Out the Vote” efforts for the upcoming midterm elections. Interested in having a stake for the prizes, but can’t make it to the 2017 AGM? A highlight of items are included here for pre-raffle participation. All early raffle purchases should be submitted via email to DAG-Events@DemoratsAbroad.org, with the total number of tickets desired, prior to 17:00 CET time on April 1st in order to be entered to the drawing. A transfer for the corresponding amount should be made to the DA Germany Account below or submitted via cash from a precinct voting location. Questions may also be directed to DAG-Events@DemocratsAbroad.org. Probability of winning is correlated with number of tickets purchased, so donate a lot and donate often!
DAG is grateful to all members and chapters who have submitted items for bidding, and to everyone who casts bids to participate. DA is a 100% volunteer organization and all financial support lends a huge hand in making it happen.

DAG is thrilled and infinitely thankful to its volunteers who have given so much from the beginning of the Primary, until the final days of the General Election! We have advanced and explored new means of getting out the vote - from very successful Facebook and YouTube ads, to thousands of calls with DPCA's new phone banking software.
While membership numbers and voter registration has flourished, the DAG account has suffered a tremendous strain. We are grateful to everyone who has supported DA Germany financially throughout the process, enabling our masses of volunteers to advance our goals.
In this final week, we ask everyone to join us in standing together, and declaring in one voice that we support the Democratic Party Candidates, down the ballot, and reject the demagogic rhetoric that has arisen across the aisle. Please consider making a gift of 25 EUR to DA Germany and receive the limited edition "She Wins, We Win" button - AND - "The Bad Hombre" - or - "Nasty Woman" Button!

Please phonebank! It’s that simple. For Democrats Abroad to do our part in this important too-close election. Sign up to make calls at www.democratsabroad.org/voter_support_team
We are in the critical phase of the presidential election cycle – the last 3 weeks before state deadlines are past for some of our overseas voters. We have a good list of U.S. Democrats in Germany, and we are calling every one of them to make sure they request and then send in their overseas absentee ballot.
Deadlines are fast approaching! They vary by state but the earliest are October 8!
It’s easy to fill out the ballot request form at www.VoteFromAbroad.org. So of course, do that, too, if you haven’t yet!
Phonebanking is my (and Lucky’s) favorite DA thing to do because it works!
Top 10 Reasons to Phonebank with Democrats Abroad
- IT WORKS! More than 50% of those reached go on to request their ballots.
- Americans living abroad want to vote!
- You can help in the critical battleground states even if you don’t vote there!
- You can make calls whenever it suits you!
- It is easy: You can call free around the world from any location with internet!
- We do the follow up work for you. There is no need to worry about sending emails for second calls!
- Volunteers feel rewarded by positive responses!
- Members feel a part of a community!
- It’s the best way to update DA’s membership list!
- We MUST ELECT Hillary Clinton, take back Congress and STOP Trump!
What we’re finding on the calls: most people haven’t yet taken that required step of sending in their ballot request. We also need to clear up some misconceptions: Registering for the DA Primary IS NOT the same as registering to vote! Many people think that, when they registered for the DA Global Presidential Primary in March, they had registered for the General Election as well. But this is not the case. For the General Election every American must register in his or her home state and apply for an absentee ballot.
Calls are quick and friendly, and folks are grateful for the nudge and the info. Phonebanking is the most effective tool to get out the Democrats Abroad vote, and the time to do it is now!
Join me in making some calls every day! Look forward to talking to some more of you soon.

P.S. Phonebanking is not the only Get Out the Vote (GOTV) effort that DAG is investing man (and woman) hours in!
- In cities throughout Germany you will find GOTV Infostands and Voter Registration events,
- Almost 1000 letters went out by post to those DAG members without phone numbers,
- All German Universities and Foreign Students Offices were contacted by email and
- Facebook & YouTube ads have been HUGELY successful, and we want to do a lot more of them through October.
These activities have proven to be very successful but do cost money, and lots and lots of volunteer hours. Deutsche Post is reliable, albeit expensive, Facebook and Youtube ads are not free and the new Phonebanking tool costs!
Please buy one of our “GOTV Survival Packs” (www.democratsabroad.org/survivalpacks), or donate to help DA Germany pay for our GOTV efforts this year:

Getting Out the Vote is hard work and in order to energize our volunteers, we have developed a pair of “GOTV Survival Packs” to help with the GOTV initiatives this fall! If you don’t have time to volunteer but would like some nice swag, please donate to fund important GOTV efforts throughout Germany:
- Facebook ads have been HUGELY successful, and we want to do a lot more through October.
- Phone banking all our members costs money, and lots and lots of volunteer hours.
- All members without a phone number (1000+) will be mailed to make sure they are up to date on this year's General Election (Deutsche Post is reliable, albeit expensive!)
Donate to Democrats Abroad Germany, receive one of the packs below, and help DAG with these critical priorities through Nov 8th! Anyone interested in volunteering, please contact our “Membership and Volunteer Coordinator” via firstname.lastname@example.org
Please choose one of the following “GOTV Survival Packs”, fill in the Google “order form” here, and make the suggested donation to The DA Germany account:
