MEET THE AUTHOR: We are looking forward to welcoming DA-Ireland’s own Larry Donnelly to a Virtual “Meet the Author” event on January 29, 2022 at 2 PM (Irish time). Larry will discuss his book, The Bostonian: Life in an Irish American Political Family. Published by Gill Books, The Bostonian has drawn critical acclaim from leading figures in the fields of journalism, politics and academia on both sides of the Atlantic.
The event is being hosted virtually on zoom, but Larry will be broadcasting from the cozy atmosphere of the Horse and Hound Pub in Delgany, County Wicklow.
In The Bostonian, Larry shares his unique perspective on politics and more. Larry grew up as a member of a dynamic Boston Irish political family, yet opted to do a reverse of his family’s journey to where he is now – back on this side of the pond as a law professor at NUI Galway and well-known media commentator. In addition to a comprehensive examination of the current political state of play in the two countries he is proud to call home, he reflects on the future of what he calls the “sacred relationship” between Ireland and America. Larry also charts the career of his most famous political family member, his uncle, former Congressman and Ambassador Brian Donnelly, who became a hero to many Irish people in the 1980s when he authored the Donnelly Visa which allowed tens of thousands of Irish to become US residents. DA Ireland was proud to honor Congressman Donnelly at our annual Thanksgiving Dinner in 2011 marking the 25th anniversary of the Donnelly Visa and saluting his many contributions to Ireland and US relations. We are especially delighted that Larry will be interviewed by Brian O’Donovan, RTÉ’s Washington correspondent from January 2018 to December 2021. Brian drew widespread praise for his outstanding coverage and analysis of the tumultuous years of the Trump presidency and the first year of the Biden presidency. Brian has written his own book – Four Years in the Cauldron – on the experience of living and working as a journalist in the US with his family during an extraordinary period.
