80 Years On, US Internment Camps, Then and Now

Please join us on May 6 for a meaningful encounter marking the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII. The evening begins at 17h00 at the Museum of Resistance and Deportation in Toulouse, followed by a guest speaker event at 19h00 in the reception room of Chez Navarre, a 15-20 minute bus ride or walk from the museum.  You are welcome to join us for all or just a part of the evening.

Our guest speaker is Dr. Michael Luick-Thrams, an American professor and author who's lived in Germany for over 30 years. He will discuss the detention of German, Japanese and Italian immigrants in the United States during WWII under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, and compare it to the arrest and detention of immigrants at camps in Texas today by the Trump administration, using the same antiquated law.

Dr. Luick-Thrams is the director of a non-profit association called TRACES (www.traces.org). Their aim is to use biographical narratives to create opportunities to talk and share perspectives--on dictatorship, on war and peace, on a rapidly changing society, and on the question of the meaning of one's own life in the face of global uncertainties--with the goal of strengthening our fragile social cohesion.

The association TRACES has created a “History Mobile”, a pedagogical vehicle which Dr. Luick-Thrams is driving to Toulouse on a European tour that began in Germany one week ago (www.traces.org/tour/).
