A long-time socialist discusses socialism in a modern context, clearing up various misconceptions on a political ideology that remains taboo and largely misunderstood by many Americans, while offering a defense of socialism as an alternative to capitalism. The intention is to have a relaxed, informative talk, and to raise awareness of politics that are becoming increasingly popular with younger generations, according to polls.
The speaker, Cesar Valdez, is a 40-year-old American teacher living in Sweden since 2006.He is a first-generation Chicano who has lived in various parts of the US. "I have been a socialist since I was a teenager, and while you may have seen me at some DA events in the past, I have never considered myself a Democrat, or a Republican for that matter. But I do enjoy political discussions and listening to other perspectives.
"Somo of you may remember me as the only person in the room at a DA meetup openly doubting that Hillary would win back in 2016 and warning of a rise of a reactionary backlash against the Democratic Party. I am a proud father of two. My wife is Swedish, and she is also a socialist. I am an environmentalist and an advocate for helping the homeless; I do what I can to contribute positively towards both these causes. In my spare time, I love wilderness backpacking, film, literature, music (mostly punk and underground music), and good food and drink."
After the opening presentation, everyone will have the chance to ask the speaker questions before we transition into more of an open discussion format. If enough attend, we will manage a queue for questions.
