🎬 Film Screening & Discussion: The Fierce Urgency of Now🎬

The Fierce Urgency of Now: How King’s Message Still Resonates is a dynamic MLK Day film screening and community conversation that invites you to sit with Dr. King’s words and leave with concrete actions you can take today.

Join us on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a special screening of That Free Men May Live (June 1, 1960), featuring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in conversation with host L. Howard Bennett on freedom, strategy, and collective responsibility. Together, we will explore why King’s moral clarity and insistence on urgent, nonviolent action still speak directly to this political moment.

Why this matters now

  • Rights require participation; democracy erodes when people stay on the sidelines.

  • Dr. King’s call for a “fierce urgency of now” challenges complacency and speaks to the threats facing democracy today.

  • This event connects the civil rights struggle of the 1960s to current fights for justice, inclusion, and voting rights.

After the screening, we will host a live conversation focused on turning inspiration into action. Discussion prompts will include:

  • What Dr. King asked of ordinary people, and how those expectations land with us now.

  • How his ideas translate into today’s struggles for racial justice, voting rights, and democratic participation.

  • Where urgency shows up in your life and community—and what it looks like to respond.

Take action

This is not a passive event; you will be invited to choose one next step you can take now rather than later. Possible actions include:

  • Request your ballot through Vote From Abroad (VoteFromAbroad.org) and commit to voting in every election (IWillVote.com).

  • Plug into DA Resists, join the Global Black Caucus phonebanking team, or volunteer with your local chapter.

  • Share Global Black Caucus social media messages or record a 30–60 second video on why you vote.

  • Ask whether your local Democrats Abroad chapter has a Black Caucus—and if not, help start one with support from the Global Black Caucus.

At the end, you will be invited into a brief “Grassroots Stretch” mindfulness-style moment to identify: one action today, one conversation this week, and one commitment you can sustain for the long haul.
