She Made Freedom Her Business: Routes out of US Slavery in the Antebellum Era

Join Democrats Abroad's Global Black Caucus for an inspiring talk with Professor María Esther Hammack, Assistant Professor of African American History at Ohio State University, as she recovers the hidden stories of Black, Indigenous, and Mexican women who forged liberation routes into Mexico and reshaped the geography of freedom in North America.

Drawing on her groundbreaking research on the Underground Railroad to Mexico, Professor Hammack will share the remarkable life of the woman known as the “Harriet Tubman of Texas” and introduce other freedom seekers, conductors, and community protectors whose stories have long been marginalized or erased.

This event will highlight a transnational network of resistance that challenges U.S.-centric narratives and expands our understanding of abolition, solidarity, and Black mobility across borders.

Join us for a powerful opportunity to learn how women’s leadership, cross‑border alliances, and acts of everyday defiance transformed the landscape of freedom—and how these histories can inform our commitments to justice and democracy today.
