Public safety is on the line as the partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues. Because of the prolonged funding lapse, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers have missed paychecks and are quitting. Airport security lines are already stretching for hours, and screening capacity is weakening by the day. Meanwhile, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) are all operating without stable funding as real-world threats continue.
Instead of fixing the problem, Donald Trump has deployed ICE agents to airports to “help handle” security—an alarming and ineffective move that sidelines trained professionals and puts travelers at greater risk.
Senate Democrats have prevailed and the funding carveout is now passed - in the Senate. Now the bill is in the House. If House Republicans block those efforts they will continue prolonging our current crisis and deepening the damage.
