Speaker Series: DA Canada and Dr. Colleen McNicholas

Posted on Events by Danielle Stampley · October 06, 2021 7:24 AM · 27 reactions

Join Democrats Abroad Canada at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT/9 pm AT on October 19, 2021 for a talk with Dr. Colleen McNicholas, the Chief Medical Officer of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri. Planned Parenthood is the sole abortion provider in the state of Missouri, though state officials have tried hard to shut it down.

A reproductive health expert with more than 10 years of experience as an obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. McNicholas will speak about the attacks on reproductive health access taking place in the U.S. and their impact on health outcomes.  She will also discuss the important ways in which we as citizens can take action. As she knows from experience, participation in local elections is key to protecting access to reproductive health care.

This event is jointly sponsored by Democrats Abroad Canada and the Democrats Abroad Women's Caucus. All are welcome.

Dr. McNicholas is the first speaker in a pivotal series of talks Democrats Abroad Canada is presenting starting this fall and leading up to the 2022 midterms.  Focused on the theme Our Democracy:  Past, Present and Future, these talks will help us learn more about our history and what we can do to improve participation and get the results we want.

Fundraiser for Voter Protection in Georgia and all over the United States

Georgia's state law, as well as other state bills designed to suppress the vote make passing the federal bill S1 - the "For the People Act" - a crucial next step!

DA will be rolling out an action campaign for all members and committees to ACT on to push our senators to pass this fundamental bill. That action will include support for an amendment to the bill further supporting Americans abroad voting rights.

Steve Nardi, DemsAbroad Canada Chair, talks with CTV News on the need to count every vote

Posted on News by Steve Nardi · November 06, 2020 6:46 AM · 1 reaction

The night after election day, as Chair of DemsAbroad Canada, I spoke with Marella Fernandez of CTV News on the variety of creative and legacy-type initiatives DemsAbroad Canada undertook to reach the est. 625k Americans living across Canada eligible to vote in the 2020 election to cast their ballot.

Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers contributing thousands of hours of their time, resulting in a greater than 250% increase in DemsAbroad Canada members' ballot requests, my prediction is that the 2020 vote from Americans in Canada will double the 2016 results. I am immensely proud of every person who contributed to this success!

I also talk to the need to count every vote, to let the process work the way it's supposed to. Each person has a right to have their vote counted. It was well known in advance that it was improbable to have an outcome on election night due to the historic millions of mail-in ballots to be counted. Neither candidate nor the media declares the election winner. The winner is determined by the declared results from each of the 50 states.

We wrap up the conversation with concerns for what the next two months could be like should Joe Biden be declared the winner as expected and any comparison between the 2000 election and 2020. For reference, the Ex is Ontario's "state fair" held in Toronto for the last two weeks of August.
