Fourth of July Barbeque at Trout Lake

Posted on Events by Darius Pruss · May 25, 2022 3:22 PM · 3 reactions

Come join us as we celebrate the Fourth of July (and Canada Day as well, if you're so inclined) in the best way: BBQ in the park!

We look forward to our first big opportunity in a long time to connect as a chapter in person. Come by and grab some BBQ, chat with other DA members and our chapter leads, and enjoy the (fingers crossed) beautiful Vancouver summer weather.

Hotdogs and hamburgers, with vegetarian options, will be offered while supplies last. We will provide plates, buns, and condiments, but feel free to bring any side dishes you would like to share. Also, this will be the first year that we are permitted to consume alcohol in the park, so bring your beverage of choice.

We will set up at the picnic shelter beginning at 4pm, but feel free to meet up or spend time in the park beforehand.

Directions: Picnic Shelter is located on the Southeast corner of the park, on E 19th Ave between Victoria Dr and Nanaimo St. Parking lot is adjacent, with nearby street parking. Accessible by public transit from Commercial-Broadway Station, Nanaimo Station, and multiple bus routes.

30th Anniversary of the GWC

Posted on Events by Karen Frankenstein · April 20, 2022 3:07 AM · 1 reaction

LET’S CELEBRATE!

The first Democrats Abroad Women’s Caucus was created in 1992 by three staunchly feminist women in Paris France, 30 years ago. , And, it has grown to a powerhouse of activist women who are  stronger than ever in 2022.

But is there cause for a celebration? Are women better off today than they were back in that famous “year of the woman” in 1992? Does the old feminist mantra “three steps forward two steps back” still hold true?

It sure does.

Backlash has hampered the feminist movement since the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 – but it hasn’t stopped us from moving forward.  A brutal pandemic and years of nonstop political and cultural polarization, a war in Europe, and the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan have left us all, especially women, in the dark.  And, as we all know, women are the first victims of repressive regimes.  But we are undaunted. We have   become the driving force of our societies and the future depends on us.

Join us on June 18 to celebrate our 30 years of activism in Democrats Abroad.  Listen to experts and activists who are behind - and in front of - the feminist movement and are taking those three steps forward.
