Demand Senators wait for SCOTUS replacement until 2021

Posted on News by Steven Nardi · September 23, 2020 12:20 AM

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Call your representatives and demand they wait: Find your Member of Congress and Senators’ information here

Just before she died, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg told her granddaughter, “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”

As Republicans plot to fill the seat before a new president is sworn in, the nation is faced with the terrifying prospect of a Supreme Court that is shifted to the far right for generations.

We've been here before. Before the 2016 election, the Republicans stopped President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland. Mitch McConnell declared: “Given that we are in the midst of the presidential election process, we believe that the American people should seize the opportunity to weigh in.”

That’s right: The American people must weigh in before the Senate moves to fill this vacancy. Honor Justice Ginburg’s memory and continue her fight for justice by calling your Republican senators today to demand that the Supreme Court vacancy stay open until after inauguration.

* Wondering what your senator said in 2016 and what they are saying now? Check out http://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/what-every-republican-senator-has-said-about-filling-a-supreme-court-vacancy-in-an-election-year

DA Edmonton - Candidate Slate 2019

Posted on News by Heidi Burch · February 21, 2019 10:34 PM · 1 reaction
CHAPTER CHAIR -
  • Provides agenda and chairs regular Chapter Board meetings
  • Provides leadership for GOTV initiatives
  • Chairs the Chapter AGM every two years
  • Represents the Chapter at the DA Canada (DACA) monthly Board meetings
Candidates:
1) Hannah Brooks: I'm originally from Nashville, TN and I moved to Canada in 2015. In the US I actually didn't
participate in politics much, that is until I lost my health insurance due to a pre-existing condition. That
galvanized me to become active in the Democratic party. Right when I arrived in Edmonton, it became clear
that Trump was going to win the Republican nomination. In response, I quickly decided to become active in the
Democratic Party here in Edmonton. I helped coordinate voter outreach during the 2016 elections and have
been the unofficial chair since 2018 midterm elections. If elected, I pledge to fulfill the duties of Chair as
effectively as possible until my term is over in March 2021.

VICE CHAIR -

  • Chairs Chapter Board meetings in the absence of the Chair
  • Assists in providing leadership for GOTV initiatives
  • Steps in for Chair as needed
Candidates: None

SECRETARY -

  • Schedules regular Chapter Board meetings
  • Takes minutes of Chapter Board meetings and distribute them to the Board
Candidates:

1) Diana Keto-Lambert: I am a proud native of the DC/Maryland metro area and a North Carolina voter; I moved to Canada in 2007. While I was living stateside, I was a member of College Democrats at University of Maryland, and volunteered on Chris Van Hollen’s 2002 congressional race, John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign, and Martin O’Malley’s 2006 gubernatorial campaign. I joined Democrats Abroad Edmonton when I discovered them in 2008, and I helped the chapter with communications outreach for Barack Obama’s campaign. I became chapter chair from 2011 – 2014 and a member-at-large since then, helping with planning and executing meetings, GOTV efforts, and social get-togethers for our chapter. Most recently, I helped work the polls in the 2018 midterm elections when visiting North Carolina.

TREASURER -

  • Provides Chapter financial reports at regular Board meetings and at the biannual AGM
  • Manages and maintains Chapter bank account, donations (cash and online) and Chapter expenses

COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR -
  • Sends event invitations and updates to DAV members, using the DA Nation Builder online email system
  • Updates and maintains the DAED Facebook page
  • Updates the DAED events web page in Nation Builder
Candidates:

1) Kimberly Johnson: After moving to Edmonton from Southern California, I joined Democrats Abroad in 2000. Upon completion of my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Canada, I lived abroad in England and the Netherlands. When I returned to Edmonton, deeply concerned about the current administration, I resolved to be a more involved Democrats Abroad member. In 2018, I was primarily responsible for communications & media relations—writing press releases, coordinating media requests and appearing as the DA Edmonton spokesperson in print and televised interviews. I also created our new Instagram account to connect our chapter to the local community and other DA chapters internationally. During the fall of 2018, I conceptualized, planned and successfully executed our “Print Your Own T-shirt” fundraiser and "Sanity Session" pub social nights. Additionally, I helped plan and facilitate our GOTV (Get Out The Vote) events on the University of Alberta campus and at the Alberta Legislature. I take great pride in the work that our chapter team accomplished leading up to the historic 2018 midterm elections. If elected as your Communications Officer & your Student Recruitment Outreach Coordinator, I will be dedicated to continuing our work, organizing our efforts and building community momentum as we approach another historic election in 2020.

STUDENT OUTREACH COORDINATOR -

  • Raises awareness of Democrats Abroad on campuses in the Chapter area
  • Coordinates on-campus voter registration events
  • Coordinates outreach to US citizens on-campus (non-DA members)
  • Liaises with the DA Canada point person on the DA Global Study Abroad Youth Outreach Team
  • Initiate and support DAED-affiliated clubs on campus
