Black music has served as a resistance mechanism for African Americans throughout their history in the United States. Keeping in the tradition of music as a resistance mechanism, Hip-Hop culture has continued to fight against injustices and for political and social rights through the music and by using previously successful political models.  This talk will discuss ways in which you can incorporate Hip-Hop culture to discuss issues of social justice domestically and internationally.

What are similarities and differences between Germany and the United States?

Special Event: Opening Reception for the  American Visionary: John F. Kennedy’s Life and Times Exhibit

American Visionary: John F. Kennedy’s Life and Times brings together seventy-seven images culled from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, Getty Images, private collections, and the Kennedy family archives. The dramatic scope of Kennedy’s life is evident in these photographs—from his first congressional bid as a decorated war hero in 1946, his fairytale marriage to Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953, his run for the White House in 1960 and role as commander in chief, to the tragedy of his death in Dallas in 1963. These images remain as indelible evidence of John Kennedy’s personal charisma and political accomplishments.

American Visionary is organized by Lawrence Schiller of Wiener Schiller Productions. It is also organized in cooperation with John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and with support by Stephen Kennedy Smith und Getty Images. The exhibition is based on the book JFK: A Vision for America. Happy Labor Day! For those not going away for the Labor Day week-end, the Swinging Lautern festival with lots of free entertainment starts Thursday, August 31st at 6 p.m. at the Stiftsplatz in Kaiserslautern and runs through Saturday evening,  September 2nd!                        A great opportunity to enjoy the local community! (and since this does not take place on U.S. government property, an opportunity to encourage some American colleagues to join Democrats Abroad!)
