Teachers and students research and understand competing viewpoints and political arguments. This project promotes respect, civility and open-mindedness as the basis for intercultural engagement.

  • The U.S. Elections System: Friend or Foe to Donald Trump?

Organized  by The Atlantic Academy Kaiserslautern  The event, held in English, will be hosted via Zoom.
Speaker: Prof. David C. Kimball, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Date:Tuesday, May 12, 2020, 7 pm.                                                                                                                                                                     Online registration via the Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung.  http://shop.freiheit.org/#!/Veranstaltung/69NAS

Description: Russian interference, hacking the electoral system, winning an election without popular vote, a highly complicated registration process, and the failure to make Election Day a national holiday have led to one of the lowest voter participation rates in the developed world.

Is the U.S. voting system in need of a fundamental update? Political scientist David Kimball will address efforts to reform the complicated election rules in the U.S. He will take a look at efforts to change the Electoral College in presidential elections and a new way to draw legislative districts. His talk further includes procedures to increase voter participation as well as efforts to make voting more convenient and to reduce fraud. David Kimball will further illustrate new voting technology and plans to make voting systems more secure from cyber threats.

    Speaker:

David Kimball is a Professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He received his Ph.D. in 1997 from Ohio State University (Political Science). He has extensively published on the U.S. election system, its processes and challenges. His latest two books are Helping America Vote: The Limits of Election Reform from 2012 and as an editor together with Richard G. Niemi, Herbert F. Weisberg in 2011: Controversies in Voting Behavior, 5th ed. Washington, DC

Memorial Day at Luxembourg American Cemetery

Memorial Day Commemoration will now be a virtual event on May 25, 2020.
In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure the health and safety of their staff and visitors per U.S. and host-nation guidelines, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) has cancelled all public Memorial Day ceremonies at their  26 cemeteries around the world.
While ABMC sites remain closed and all public ceremonies are canceled, to fulfill their sacred mission, ABMC will commemorate Memorial Day virtually with ceremonies that will be available for viewing through the agency’s social media platforms on May 25, 2020.

For more information about ABMC’s Memorial Day 2020 virtual ceremonies, please monitor ABMC.gov and our social media platforms.
