Presented by Democrats Abroad Netherland's member Jennifer Tosch of Black Heritage Tours. Join us for a private tour just for DA! Ticket cost includes light snacks & beverages, adn a donation to Democrats Abroad.
Once on board, after a brief introduction, our tour journey begins as we travel along the Amsterdam canals and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, exploring the city's 'hidden history' of the early Black presence, other free and not free peoples from around the world that first immigrated to the Netherlands; locations of the Dutch East and West India Companies; colonial symbols on canal houses, national monuments and museums. Places directly connected to the shared history with the U.S.
Visiting Amsterdam from the canals is the best way to experience this beautiful historic city. While exploring the African legacies of the past and diverse Dutch culture, we will pass several historically and culturally significant landmarks during the tour.
You will learn about recently revealed 'Black community' of men, women and children that lived in Amsterdam as early as the 16th Century alongside the history of the wealthiest merchants who were Directors of the WIC (West India Company) or the VOC (United Dutch East India Company), shareholders or owners of plantations in the Dutch colonies.
The tour continues visiting historical landmarks that include the Maritime Museum where a replica of an18th century VOC ‘cargo ship' is docked, which is a similar type of ship outfitted to transport enslaved Africans. After the tour, you may choose from many of the great restaurants in the area to commemorate and reflect on your experience.
