Voting Process

All voters are encouraged to bring some form of identification to the voting center.  Although no ID is required for members of Democrats Abroad Japan, brining ID will be a safeguard to ensure the ability to cast a full ballot in case the voting center staff become unable to access the Democrats Abroad database.  As discussed below, all non-member who join Democrats Abroad Japan at the voting center must bring some form of identification.  Partisan primaries are not confidential in the way that federal elections are.  Therefore, voters should be prepared to provide their full contact information on their ballots.  Also, ballots in the Global Primary must be signed to be valid.

Primary Participation

Americans may only participate in one presidential primary.  We encourage our members to vote in the Democrats Abroad Global Presidential Primary and their state primaries, provided that they only vote for down-ballot races (i.e., Senate and House) in their state primaries. Anyone who in 2016 has already cast a ballot for president in any other primary or has participated in a caucus cannot participate in the Democrats Abroad Global Presidential Primary.

Same Day Voter Registration

Non-members of Democrats Abroad Japan may join and register at any voting center.  Same day registration requires presentation of some form of identification that is sufficient to establish the identity of the voter.  Eligibility to join Democrats Abroad Japan is restricted to American citizens currently living in Japan who will be at least 18 years old on or before November 8, 2016. Members must also subscribe to the principles of the Democratic Party of the United States.

Volunteers Needed

Anyone interested in volunteering to work as voting center staff, please complete and submit the Volunteer Form.  If you have any questions, please email Tom Schmid, DAJ Chair, at
