Democrats Abroad - Global Presidential Primary (GPP) In-Person Voting draws Volunteers and Voters in Luxembourg.

On March 5, 2024, in-person voting took place at the Schéiss Cultural Center in Belair of Luxembourg City. Not only was there in-person voting, but potential voters could register to be members of Democrats Abroad (DA), as part of democratic party, which is a condition to vote in the primaries. They also could register for their absentee ballot for the general election on November 5, 2024.

The democratic party is unique that Democrats Abroad (DA) has the same representation as a state and is represented at Democratic National Convention with 21 delegates to be held in Chicago, Il on August 19,2024.

Democrats Abroad (DA) members had the choice of voting for:

  • Joe Biden
  • Marriane Williamson
  • Uncommitted

The preliminary results will be revealed at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday March 12, 2024 at QuSQo (Place d’Armes Luxembourg City) at 7 PM. One can RSVP here DA Luxembourg - Annual General Meeting (AGM) (democratsabroad.org).

There are three ways for Democrats living abroad to vote in the presidential primaries.

  • They can register with their county clerk in the USA to request their absentee ballot and submit in their respective state. In this case they are voting in their state’s primary and not in the Global Presidential Primary (GPP).

  • For voting in the global presidential primary, Democrats Abroad Luxembourg (DAL) could request a ballot by email [email protected] and submit by email per the instructions that came with the ballot.
  • And finally, the in-person voting which is the focus of this article.

The procedure from in-person voting is generally as follows:

  1. A check is made to make sure that you have not voted in a voter’s respective state already.
  2. A check is made to make sure the voter is a member of Democrats Abroad. If not, we can register a voter on the spot if the voter desires.
  3. We do check to make sure that they have not voted in the GPP by email already.
  4. The required information is added to the voter’s ballot (ballot number, member number)
  5. The voter is directed to the voting area.
  6. When the voter is finished, they are directed to the ballot box where the ballot is checked by a volunteer and then the voter places their ballot in the box.

Thankfully, we had three volunteers that assisted with the event; Joseph Hammes, Robert Blanke, and Gio Jimenez. These volunteers checked ballots and watched the ballot box. We also have Shiela Schickel back with us from a short stay outside Luxembourg. Welcome back Shiela!  We had a stream of voters through the evening. Most of the voters were new to DAL and we had a chance to introduce ourselves. One of DA Luxembourg’s objectives is to grow our membership, and this was a great step in that direction. In 2024 we plan on having several more events and guest speakers.
