The American Election & The American Democratic Crisis

“The American Election & The American Democratic Crisis

We are fortunate to have Professor Hilde Restad as our speaker at 7 pm on Tuesday, April 23, at the Deichman Library, Bjørvika. Her topic will be “The American election & The American democratic crisis”. She will focus on the November 5th election and the continuing political and cultural polarization. The event will be in person and online.

Hilde is an Associate Professor of International Studies at Oslo New University College. She grew up in the northernmost town in the world, Hammerfest, Norway.  In her writing and public speaking, Professor Restad has an engaging way of framing American history and current political events.

Hilde last spoke to DAN in 2022 about her latest book, The American Paradox. The book examines how democratic liberal ideals formed the foundation of America. Yet, American history was marked by slavery, genocide, ethnic cleansing, and the exclusion of women. The book better explains how this paradox still echoes in today's American culture and political system.

Her first book, American Exceptionalism: An Idea that Made a Nation and Remade the World was on the concept of American exceptionalism as a national identity, and its effect on U.S. foreign policy throughout American history.

Hilde is regularly featured as an analyst of American politics in Norwegian media.  In 2020 she developed and co-hosted a podcast miniseries in Norwegian about the historical development of American political institutions.

Please join us and Professor Restad on April 23 for this important event.
