On Our Mind

Earth Day

We’re guests on this planet. And let’s face it ... we’re not always good ones.

So for Earth Day this year, how about taking the Trash Tag Challenge?

It’s simple: take a before photo of a place where there is a bunch of trash, then clean it all up.  Take an after photo when finished. You get bragging rights and can motivate others by documenting it on Instagram and Twitter using #trashtagchallenge.*

* Send your photos to us on our Democrats Abroad France Facebook page with the names of the people in the picture.  We'll post them on the page to encourage other members to do the same!!!

About Earth Day:

Today is the 49th Earth Day.

Democratic Senator Gaylord Nelson came up with the idea for Earth Day after seeing the devastation caused by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, which killed more than 3500 birds off the coast of California. The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, was marked by 22 million Americans who marched to protest against damage done to the environment. That event led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passing of a raft of environmental legislation.

In the years since Earth Day has spread worldwide and is now celebrated in more than 190 countries worldwide.
