Black History Month

DAY Header

February is Black History Month, a time not only for remembrance, but for recommitment. For Democrats Abroad Yucatán, it is a moment to honor the Black voices that have shaped American democracy — and to recognize how that legacy continues through our collective action today. Black history teaches us that democracy is not self-sustaining. It is upheld by people willing to organize, to vote, to gather, and to insist — nonviolently and persistently — on justice.

“What the people want is very simple. They want an America as good as its promise.”
— Barbara Jordan

From Shirley Chisholm, who ran for president so others could imagine themselves there, to Josephine Baker, who risked her life spying against fascism in the 1940s; from the moral clarity of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to the steady courage of leaders like President Barack ObamaVice President Kamala Harris, and Representative Jasmine Crockett — Black leadership has always expanded the meaning of democracy.

“If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”
— Shirley Chisholm

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
— Martin Luther King Jr.

“I walked into the storm so that others could walk out in the sunshine.”
— Josephine Baker

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time.”
— Barack Obama
