On our regular second Tuesday meeting, February 10th, Democrats Abroad Luxembourg hosted Mr. Yves Cruchten for an in-depth discussion building on his long experience in the Chamber of Deputies, the LSAP, and the Council of Europe. He described how European perceptions of the United States have shifted across generations: many young people now see the U.S. largely through the lens of Trump-era extremism, while even older generations who once held a strongly positive image have grown more skeptical and negative as they watch what they view as destabilizing, headline-grabbing initiatives and rhetoric—such as talk of buying Greenland or aggressive posturing around Venezuela—that seem to disregard international norms and long-term alliances. This growing unease, he argued, reinforces how crucial it is for Americans abroad to contact their representatives in the U.S., insisting that anti-Trump and anti-MAGA voices must be louder to break through the sheer volume of Trump-centered coverage that dominates the European and international media landscape. After his formal remarks, he continued the conversation in small groups, giving members space to ask questions and reflect on what this changing image of America means for transatlantic relations and for their own political engagement. He also indicated that future engagements and collaboration with DAL and Americans abroad would be welcomed.
