Across the 45th Parallel: An Evening with Playwright Terry L. Allison

Democrats Abroad Québec (DAQC) is delighted to invite our members to a very special cultural evening in the Eastern Townships. As part of our ongoing commitment to creating more opportunities for Americans abroad to gather, connect, and share meaningful experiences, we are hosting an exclusive Pre-Show Meet & Greet + Q&A with playwright Terry L. Allison ahead of the first-ever public reading of his new play 45th Parallel at Théâtre Lac-Brome.

This is your chance to "step behind the curtain" with the creative mind behind a timely new dramedy inspired by real cross-border tensions, community resilience, and the absurdities of borders themselves. Think of it as the civic-minded equivalent of a fan-club pre-show pass: an intimate moment with the artist, one of our own, before the only reading of the play.

If you can’t make the pre-show gathering, no worries. The theatre will host a second public Q&A after the performance.

About 45th Parallel

In this fresh and thoughtful dramedy, playwright Terry L. Allison invites us into the long-divided world of the fictional Gagnon family, whose ancestral farm and beloved Beavertail Lake were sliced in half by the 1908 Quebec-Vermont border survey. The international line may be invisible, but its consequences ripple through generations.

First cousins Marie-Louise and Andy have learned to navigate life along the 45th parallel with good humor and occasional frustration—until a new threat arrives: proposals for a hardened, militarized border wall that would cut through their family land, shatter their privacy, and upend plans for the next generation.

Old disagreements, cultural divides, and national loyalties resurface as the family confronts a question many borderland communities now face: What happens when political decisions made far away threaten the relationships closest to home?

45th Parallel blends warmth, wit, and tension as the cousins rally siblings, elders, and reluctant relatives to defend their forest, their lake, and their intertwined futures. Part comedy, part cautionary tale, and deeply rooted in real events unfolding just south of the border—including debates over new wall segments and the surreal history of Haskell Free Library & Opera House—the play offers both laughter and reflection.

This first public reading is directed by Natalie Hamel Roy, guiding distinguished actors from television, theatre, film, and radio as they bring the Gagnon family to life.

The performance is followed by a discussion led by Vivien Grenier, offering audiences the rare chance to help shape a work still in development.

About the Playwright: Terry L. Allison

Terry L. Allison is an American educator, arts advocate, and writer whose career has spanned universities in California, Illinois, and Indiana, where he served as professor, arts dean, and eventually Chancellor of Indiana University South Bend. A longtime champion of LGBTQ leadership, gender studies, and the performing arts, Allison spent decades nurturing creative voices while publishing work in literature, film, sexuality, and theatre.

During the pandemic, while living in northern Vermont and separated from his Canadian spouse by the closed border, Allison began writing a series of plays exploring identity, belonging, and the strange realities of life at and across borders. 45th Parallel is the first of these works to reach public reading.

Now retired from university administration and residing in Montréal with his husband, noted voice actor Sylvain Hétu, Allison continues to write plays, short fiction, and memoirs. His creative work draws on a lifetime of community engagement, academic leadership, and personal experience with borders both literal and figurative. Democrats Abroad Québec (DAQC) is proud to count Terry among our loyal and active members — a creator whose work continues to bridge cultures, communities, and conversations across borders.

Important Note on Reservations

Seating is limited — and this little gem of a theatre, nestled in the heart of Québec’s Eastern Townships, is a favourite among locals on both sides of the border. We strongly recommend reserving your spot as soon as possible!

To help us and the playwright gauge attendance, as DAQC members attending, please complete both steps:

If you’re joining us from out of town, don’t forget to book your accommodations early and make a full evening (or weekend!) of it.

We look forward to sharing this unique cultural and political moment with you.

Your DAQC ExCom Team!

P.S. Every rally, every gathering, every voice raised together for democracy here in Québec takes resources to make possible. Reserving venues, organizing events, and preparing for future actions all come with costs. Right now, we do not have local funds to sustain this work. If you have felt the power of standing together in this community, and if you want to see these spaces continue where Americans abroad can connect, be heard, and take action, please consider making a donation. Every dollar stays here in Québec to fuel our efforts.

There are three ways to contribute:
1 - Buy a DAQC Sticker – $2 CAD
High-quality, weather- and UV-resistant. Every sticker purchased goes directly toward funding our future events. Purchase them exclusively in-person at our events!

2 - Make a $CAD Donation via Interac
Send to [email protected] (auto-deposit enabled). This is our preferred method because it saves fees and puts your contribution to work immediately.

3 - Make a $USD Donation Online
Donate here: DA Québec Donation Link. Funds are held in trust by Democrats Abroad Canada for our local chapter.

Thank you again for helping in our mission of calling out the current administration's draconian policies and registering as many Americans abroad as possible to vote, so that we can take back the House and Senate in next year's midterms.
