Join us for a watch party for Dr. Nancy Goldstein's presentation on Stonewall and the origin's of the modern LGBTQ+ movement. Dr. Goldstein is former professor of Gender & LGBTQ+ Studies at Harvard, MIT and Brandeis. She is presenting in Barcelona and has generously agreed to share the recording of her presentation with us.
Presentation topics include:
- Hetero norms (and the ways in which LGBTQ+ people challenge them) as demonstrated by Barbie & Ken dolls;
- Present-day Pride celebrations all around the world;
- the role of World War II (WWII) and the military in the creation of LGBTQ+ relationships and communities;
- the historical events that led up to the Stonewall riot, including the demonization and criminalization of "deviants" after WWII;
- the way that the Civil Rights movement modeled peaceful resistance for earlier protests by LGBTQ people and organizations;
- the huge role that two different closeted gay men had in the persecution of LGBTQ people in the years after WWII: J. Edgar Hoover, the head of the FBI, and Roy Cohn, who assisted Senator Joe McCarthy in his communist witch hunt, and later served as a lawyer for Donald Trump;
- the Stonewall riot itself;
- the activism that came out of the Stonewall riots, much of it led by transgender people of color, and its effect on LGBTQ activism in the USA and all around the world.
