On Saturday, September 13, Kanto Chapter leaders met with Malcolm Kenyatta and Shasti Conrad—two inspiring leaders who, even in their own free time, came to support Democrats Abroad Japan. Their dedication and work are truly motivating.
Malcolm Kenyatta is a Pennsylvania State Representative and Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). He has built a strong reputation as a progressive voice, advocating for healthcare, education, economic equality, and most recently drawing attention to protecting public transit funding.
Shasti Conrad is the Chair of the Washington State Democratic Party and was elected Vice Chair of the DNC in 2025. She has served on both Barack Obama’s and Bernie Sanders’ campaigns and co-founded a PAC dedicated to electing Black women to office.
While this was a brief meeting, we were able to raise concerns that are important to DAJ members. We stated, “there feels to be an absence of direction from the Democratic Party,” and emphasized the importance of strengthening the Party’s relationship with Democrats Abroad, ensuring sustained support and presence from our constituents, and clarifying the roadmap ahead.
They listened thoughtfully and acknowledged our concerns while offering reassurances. These young leaders have given us the second wind we needed in these challenging times. We will always welcome you to your home abroad.
