A Well-Informed Citizenry

DAGR's Member Survey Results

A Well-Informed Citizenry

By Alkman Granitsas and Karen Lee

The members of Democrats Abroad Greece represent a well-informed citizenry, which is the best defense against tyranny (to borrow a phrase from Thomas Jefferson).

According to our recent media survey, more than three-quarters of DAGR members – 77% to be exact get their news from major print outlets, such as leading U.S. and international newspapers like the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and The Guardian, among others. Another 11% follow major international networks for their news, channels like BBC and CNN.

The survey matches the trend seen among sophisticated voters across the U.S. Namely, that Democrats get their information from more sources and have more trust in major media than do Republicans.

A recent Pew Research Center survey, for example, notes that more than half of Republicans, 57%, rely on just one source of information: Fox News. And the right wing network is the only news outlet that a majority of Republicans, 56%, even trust (two-thirds to three-quarters of Republicans don’t trust any of America’s top 30 news sources).

For DAGR news, we asked specifically how you, our members, would like us to stay in touch.

Among respondents to the DAGR media survey, almost all are readers of our monthly newsletter – particularly the Chair’s Corner and upcoming events sections – and more than eight out of 10 stay up to date with DAGR activities through our emails. And roughly the same percentage say they want to hear more from us about the online and in-person activities that we organize. About half also thought we should post a bit more humor, more articles from DAGR members, and global news and issues.

Eight in 10 members also surf our website from time to time and about half, 54%, visit our Facebook feed. A little less popular, but fast growing and significant for younger DAGR voters is our Instagram feed, which roughly 40% of respondents followed. (Almost no one has Twitter!)

Where do we go from here? A lot of folks would like to see the Democratic Party do more, particularly against the dirty tactics of the MAGA movement. And here in Greece, it’s important for all of us to draw strength from one another.

As one member writes in response to our invitation for further comment: “More get-togethers. They help with morale.”
