Come Together, Right Now
By Irem Tunc, Alkman Granitsas
There is an urgent need for Democrats to come together because the future of American democracy is at stake. Within our strong community, we can find a path forward as we build resistance against those (elected or not) trying to dismantle everything America stands for.
We asked you, our members, how you are feeling about the world and what we as Democrats Abroad Greece could do. The survey results are in and, no surprise, all of us are feeling anxious.
To the question: On a scale of 1-5, how concerned are you about the newly elected Administration and their agenda? The answer, averaged across all respondents, was 5 (okay, technically, 4.97 but we’ve rounded it up).
To the question: What political topics in the US are you most interested in? (check all that apply) The Top 5 responses were: Climate Change, Gun Control/Violence, Social Justice and Education (tied), Women’s Rights and Foreign Policy (tied).
But the interesting thing was what many of you said in your remarks. The shared feeling is that American democracy is under violent assault by an out-of-control president surrounded by “gutless sycophants” (one member’s description of Republican Members of Congress) and oligarchs (read: Elon Musk).
In your own words:
· “It's all happening so fast and furious with ludicrous, not thought out properly, decisions.”
· “The way the Trump/Musk team is demolishing the US Government and populating what's left of it with yes-people there won’t be a free and fair Midterm elections in 26.”
· “It will be a sh*t show! The worst four years in the country’s history and at this point, we have no idea if we will get through it and still be a recognizable democracy!”
· “My main concern is that the US could be taken over by those who wish to nullify the Constitution and destroy democracy.”
· “It's heartbreaking and unbelievably depressing to see our democracy and our country slide into the abyss.”
· “I am so saddened that this is what has come to what was once considered the land of opportunity.”
We also asked you what you thought about us at DAGR, what we are doing right and what we could do better. Far and away, the most important thing we do is to help people register and vote (100% of respondents agreed). Next up was building our community and 80% of members felt we should work on bringing people together, mainly though in-person events.
We hear you and that’s what we’re going to do. So, check our DAGR Events page to gather in-person or virtually with fellow Democrats. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay updated on the news.
One final note - More than half of you responded that you are willing to volunteer more with us. Because of this incredible response, we are immediately seeking someone who is willing to donate their time as a volunteer coordinator. Please contact us at [email protected]
Let’s all come together, right now!
