DAGR Kafeneion: Caste

Kafeneion is back with a discussion of the powerful book Caste, by Isabel Wilkerson.

Guest moderator, veteran writer and journalist René Syler, will lead us through a group discussion on Wilkerson’s compelling description of racism in the United States as an aspect of caste.

Described by the New York Times as an “instant American classic,” Caste explores the notions of hierarchy, inclusion and exclusion, purity, divine will, endogamy, dehumanization, terror and stigma as they relate to our American experience. Together they contribute to a society-wide system of social stratification, determined at birth, and based on criteria such as wealth, rank, privilege, occupation, religion, or physical attributes. The book has also been made into a film by Ava DuVernay entitled Origins.
