Dems Abroad Greece Holds AGM
The Annual General Meeting on Jan 29, set a few new milestones for DAGR. Not least of these was the guest appearance by DA Ιnternational Chair Martha McDevitt-Pugh. McDevitt-Pugh joined from Washington, DC, where she and the Dems Abroad delegation are adding our voice to the election of the next leaders and strategies for the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Her message was upbeat: winning special elections in play for 2025, staving off the bad federal policies already set in motion last week, and winning back the House in 2026 midterm elections.
The internationall chair’s message joined similar good news from around Greece. Attendees stayed engaged for nearly two hours, to hear:
- DA Greece upped its use of the VoteFromAbroad registration tool by nearly 20%. This was largely due to increased media coverage, online advertising, and a healthy spurt of outreach to young people in Study Abroad programs.
- Membership also grew, with pre-election phone-banking and outreach. Interest continues to grow as concerned Americans ask what they can do to thwart current attacks on the rule of law.
- Despite its best and brightest being ‘poached’ to run for ExCom, Communications grew and honed its channels: email and social media for ‘in reach’ to members, press-media for outreach to the community.
- Our bills are paid, a tad remains in our accounts, and some promising efforts showed ways to continue without dunning members.
- Thessaloniki Chapter Happy Hours have shown the path. Athens is settling into steady. At-Large Chapter is working on ways to gather outlying members into community.
The unspoken message was the medium. The live-online hybrid meeting, this time, was aided by professional equipment: microphones, speakers and a zoomable camera. The result was what DAGR has been working up to since our first halting attempts with a patchwork of brought-from-home laptops in 2015. Our techie member has come very close using our version of ‘bailing wire,’ but the camera-mic system was what he’s wanted. Joy to the world!
Oh, and, one more thing: Democrats Abroad Greece has a new ExCom for the 2025-26 term. Brady Kiesling, who led us ably through the challenging past two years, handed off the baton to Alkman Granitsas. The press release just below lists the new officers and titles. Read it here, or gather it from Greek press and media shortly.
