Democrats Abroad Greece (DAGR) extend our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Margaret Papandreou.
Margaret was not only a foundational pillar of the women’s movement in Greece, but also a visionary leader who redirected the course of modern history. Her fierce devotion to gender equality transformed the legal, social, and cultural fabric of her adopted homeland. Through her leadership, she paved the way for monumental advancements in equality, giving voice and agency to millions.
The members of DAGR, Americans and Greek Americans, who were living in Greece in the 1980s, remember Margaret as a catalyst for change. She was a person whose achievement is measured not only by her contribution to the modernization of the family law, but also by her profound effect on changing social awareness. Through her efforts she raised the consciousness of both men and women, helping Greek society understand that only through mutual respect and cooperation could the country meet the demands of the future.
DAGR also holds dear our special connection to her, a Midwestern American who, like many of us, had adopted Greece as her new home. In 2015, she accepted our invitation to become the honorary chair of the newly formed DAGR Women's Caucus.
Now, forty years after her pivotal role in codifying women’s rights, Margaret’s legacy echoes across Greece and lives on in every woman who walks with greater equality and dignity because Margaret dared.
May she remain a model and inspiration for all those who devote their energies to making the world a better place.
