Fellow Americans,

The United States reaches its 250th anniversary in 2026. It seems a good moment to suggest that American institutions in Greece honor that milestone. Aristotle famously observed that a state is a community of citizens sharing in a common good. Democratic participation is the backbone of a healthy community, and we should do all we can to promote it.

America’s Semiquincentennial coincides with another milestone. Forty years ago President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA). This 1986 landmark legislation guarantees U.S. citizens residing abroad the unfettered right to vote by mail in federal elections. This is a right that dozens of other countries, including our host country of Greece, have since moved to enshrine in law.

American citizen members of your community should be encouraged to exercise their right to vote in this year’s U.S. elections. To simplify an outwardly complex process, we urge you to share with the eligible U.S. voters a pair of non-partisan websites: votefromabroad.org and fvap.gov. Either will help American citizens successfully request that their federal election ballot be emailed to them in time to complete it and return it back before election day.

Our organization, Democrats Abroad, has the mission of mobilizing and amplifying the political voice of U.S. citizens working, studying, or otherwise resident outside the United States. As Alexis de Tocqueville noted in Democracy in America, associations like ours are vital components of democracy, enabling individuals to work together for shared objectives and enhancing the overall fabric of American life.

Tocqueville wrote: “When an American asks for the cooperation of his fellow citizens, it is seldom refused; and I have often seen it afforded spontaneously and with great good will.” We trust that we as a nation are still worthy of such praise.

By encouraging your staff, members, faculty, students and associates to vote from abroad, you are helping them maintain their connection to home and their commitment to America’s democratic institutions. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Alkman Granitsas & Karen Lee
Chair & Vice Chair

On behalf of the Executive Committee of Democrats Abroad Greece.
