Open Letter Welcoming Ambassador Guilfoyle

The Honorable Kimberly Guilfoyle
The Ambassador of the United States

18 October 2025

Dear Madam Ambassador,

The Executive Committee and members of Democrats Abroad Greece would like to extend a warm welcome to you to Athens and look forward to working with you in building upon the already strong U.S.-Greece bilateral relationship.

Over the last decade and-a-half, that relationship has reached new heights in cooperation and mutual support. Outspoken U.S. backing for Greece during its financial crisis, combined with the advancement of U.S. interests in the wider region of Southeast Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, has erased almost all the historical ill-will that long weighed on public perceptions. We are certain you will help further improve the climate.

Even so, an active, charismatic ambassador would be a welcome counterweight to the news reaching Greeks from the U.S. these days. The potential losses facing Greek producers from new tariffs, the impacts of trade wars on Greek shipping, the assaults on international law and institutions, and the mistreatment of foreign visitors to America, are all issues of concern to your Greek hosts and the Greek public.

As you know, America has long been a magnet for Greeks. To the million or more Greeks that emigrated to America over the past century, the U.S. has always been a land of opportunity – a place where hard work and entrepreneurialism were rewarded; a destination for education, research and the advancement of knowledge; and as a free and open democracy. Both America and Greece benefitted from that exchange. However, the allure of America to potential migrants has darkened in the past few months amid horror stories of arbitrary detentions and deportations, attacks on leading universities, the rise in political violence and the growing use of military forces for civilian policing.

And for the tens of thousands of Americans in Greece, the attempt by Republicans in Congress to impose crippling restrictions on overseas voters and President Donald Trump’s hostility to overseas American voters, the issue of mail-in ballots is a vital concern. We hope that you will pay attention to a crucial, increasingly neglected part of any diplomat’s duties: namely, to look after the large community of U.S. citizens resident here.

America and Greece have benefitted mightily from the mutual relationship that has characterized the two countries’ long friendship. From the U.S. Founding Fathers who borrowed heavily from the ideals of ancient Greece, to the many contemporary Greeks who have contributed to America’s advancement in sciences and the arts, to the intertwined geopolitical interests both countries share in this region of the world. We hope your stay in Greece will prove an important building block in that two-century-old bilateral relationship.

Sincerely,

The Executive Committee
Democrats Abroad Greece
