Grassroots Organizing: How We Clear a Path to Victory
Your work as a volunteer matters more than ever. Roughly 60% of the people who run our elections are chosen by state party appointment or partisan election. That makes state parties, and the volunteers who power them, essential to Democratic wins at every level. State parties are the year-round, on-the-ground link between Democratic power and grassroots energy, and they do work no one else can do.
Martha Laning has seen this firsthand. As Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, she engaged the grassroots statewide and built one of the nation's most influential voter outreach programs. In 2018, Wisconsin Democrats won every statewide race, something no party had done in the state since 1984. Martha knows that winning takes great candidates, strong partners, and a Party that engages the grassroots year-round.

About the Speaker
Martha Laning is the Founder of the State Party Advancement Network (SPAN), a donor table focused exclusively on raising funds for Democratic state parties. She created it after building state party infrastructure in Wisconsin to defeat Scott Walker.
Martha came to politics from business and community development. In 2014, she ran for the State Senate to stop then-Governor Walker's attacks on education and Wisconsin communities. Her loss made one thing clear: the Democratic Party's brand needed work, and without a stronger Party, Democratic candidates would always be at a disadvantage.
She later became Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin (WisDems). Under her leadership, WisDems engaged the grassroots statewide and built one of the nation's most influential voter outreach programs. She established a Candidate Service Department and launched a more robust digital program. The results were historic: in 2018, Wisconsin Democrats won every statewide race, something no party had done in the state since 1984.
Martha knows that a strong Democratic state requires great candidates, strong C4 partners, and a Party with the infrastructure to engage the grassroots year-round.
In 2019, she left WisDems to found SPAN, which helps well-run state parties build lasting, year-round infrastructure. She has raised more than $6 million, supporting over 23 state parties and Democrats Abroad.
