Nairobi has more to offer than most first-time visitors expect — wildlife inside the city limits, world-class conservation work, layers of history from pre-colonial through to independence, and a food scene that punches well above its weight. We’ve put together a set of optional excursions for Friday before the conference and Monday after it, so you can make the most of your time here.
All tracks depart from and return to the Park Inn by Radisson, Westlands. Prices include transport, entry fees, and lunch.
The participant lists for these events are now finalized - if you want to add on, please reach out to [email protected].
At a glance
Track A runs on both days — same experience, two opportunities to join. Pick the day that suits your travel.
FRIDAY — Pre-Conference
Track A: Wildlife & Nature — $230 per person
The best wildlife experience in any capital city in the world, full stop. Nairobi National Park sits right on the city’s southern edge, and by 7 AM you can be watching lions move across open savanna with the Nairobi skyline behind you. After the game drive, the morning finishes at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage — rescued baby elephants at close range, with the keepers on hand to explain the conservation work behind it. Lunch on the way back before the welcome reception.
What’s included: Tour van transport, park entry, Elephant Orphanage entry, lunch. Note: The Orphanage viewing window is fixed at 11 AM–12 PM. The 6:30 AM departure is firm.
Track B: Giraffes, Karen & Bomas — $105 per person
A full half-day in Nairobi’s leafy southern corridor. Start at the Giraffe Centre, where you’ll feed endangered Rothschild giraffes at eye level — one of those experiences that doesn’t get old regardless of how well-travelled you are. Then on to the Karen Blixen Museum, the colonial home and gardens that inspired Out of Africa, set against the backdrop of the Ngong Hills. The day closes at Bomas of Kenya, a living cultural village showcasing traditional homesteads, crafts, and performing arts from communities across the country. Lunch before heading back.
What’s included: Transport, Giraffe Centre entry, Karen Blixen Museum entry, Bomas of Kenya entry, lunch. Note: With three venues plus lunch, this track runs into the mid-afternoon. If the Welcome Reception begins early Friday evening, plan accordingly.
Track C: City Beats — $55 per person
The easiest and most flexible track — ideal if you’re arriving on Friday and want to ease into Nairobi rather than hit the ground running. Browse the Maasai Market for handmade crafts, jewellery, and textiles (bargaining expected and encouraged), then head to the KICC for lunch at Ashaki and a rooftop view across the CBD. The afternoon is yours.
What’s included: Transport, lunch.
Bring: Cash (KSH or USD) for the market. Better pricing available for KSH users. Cards are not reliably accepted at market stalls.
MONDAY — Post-Conference
Track A: Wildlife & Nature — $230 per person
Same experience as Friday’s Track A. If you couldn’t make it on Friday, or simply want to go twice, Monday’s run follows the same itinerary. Spots are limited — sign up early.
What’s included: Tour van transport, park entry, Elephant Orphanage entry, lunch.
Track B: History & Heritage — $60 per person
A walk through the layers of Nairobi’s history, from pre-colonial through to independence and beyond. The National Museums of Kenya anchors the morning — comprehensive, well-curated, and worth every minute. From there, the Kenya National Archives holds an extraordinary visual record of the colonial period and the independence era. A short walk away, the Nairobi Gallery pairs historical documents with contemporary Kenyan art. Lunch in the CBD before heading back.
What’s included: Transport, museum entry, lunch.
Track C: Markets & Gursha — $40 per person
A low-key final morning in Nairobi before flights. Start at the West African Market for fabrics, craft goods, and the kind of unhurried browsing that’s hard to rush, then on to the City Market in the CBD — fresh produce, curios, and a lot of atmosphere. Lunch at Gursha, one of Nairobi’s best Ethiopian restaurants, just back toward Westlands. A good send-off.
What’s included: Transport, lunch. Bring: Cash for the markets.
