Picking up the phone is one of the most powerful tools we have to create change. Calling lawmakers and decision-makers keeps the pressure on and makes sure our voices are heard. Studies show that phone calls are far more effective than emails or postcards, and yet, as AOC reminds us, Republicans are eight times more likely to call than Democrats.
Let’s change that. Check out Democrats Abroad’s Take Action page, 5calls.org, Indivisible, and the ACLU for call scripts and ideas. If someone on your team doesn't want to call, they can send an email, but remember: a ringing phone is hard to ignore and Congressional staffers calculate the importance of an issue the more they hear about it.
Before the meeting:
- Research key topics and best groups of officials to call.
- Prep call scripts and talking points.
- Gather links to phone numbers and contact details for officials.
- Ask callers to be prepared to call a US number from abroad (through Skype, eSim, or other service)
Check out DA’s Take Action site for hot topics, sample scripts, and links to contact info.
During the meeting:
- Review the topic and practice calls before you get started.
- Explain who to call and how to identify their contact information
- Make calls together.
- Support callers in navigating any responses or challenges.
- Record staff feedback.
Follow-up:
- Encourage your team to share their experience on social media (tag @demsabroad!).
- Let us know! Write [email protected] about your experience
