NCB April 2021 Newsletter

We've got some cool stuff in the works and want all Americans in our chapter to have access to events and information! NCB Members who opt-in to receiving e-mails get this newsletter delivered monthly.

Can you believe it is April 2021 already?  In our part of the world, we are still in partial lockdown and the weather is not quite spring like yet!  However, we look forward to new events, developments, and renewed energy for our Democrats Abroad Germany community.  We celebrated our new executive committee for 2021 to 2023 after national elections in March, and are busy with interesting events this month. April is also well known for Earth Day, and hopefully we will all think about and act to protect our environment!

We are especially thrilled about hosting an online speaker event on April 22nd, with former Michigan Congressman Bart Stupak. Make sure to RSVP (details below).  In addition, there is some new caucus activity, most prominently the DAG AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Caucus.  There are several interesting things happening, so please check them out on our Events Page!

Speaking of the AAPI Caucus, we are excited to announce a special speakers event on May 7th, at 7 p.m. Our NCB Chapter will be co-sponsoring this event with the newly created Germany AAPI Caucus to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month in May and meet our amazing speakers, Andy Kang, Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Chicago, and Emily Lines, our dedicated, newly elected Vice Chair of DA Germany, and Global co-chair of the AAPI Caucus! There has been so much discrimination against and animosity toward Americans of Asian descent this past year, and we as a compassionate, Democratic community must always be supportive of each other. Andy and Emily will share their unique perspectives and work experiences.

To also have a bit of fun while celebrating AAPI Heritage Month, I will host a virtual Korean Cooking Program on Saturday, May 8th, at 5pm. Make sure to RSVP (details below).

Finally, as NCB chapter Outreach Coordinator, I am committed to and excited about meeting more new people in our region, and ask for your help in reaching out to new members around our part of Germany. In particular, it would be fantastic to find more American students studying in Germany and to reach out to dual citizens, who are all eligible to vote in the U.S. Our chapter is also looking for new ways to connect with military families. We will keep striving to locate more Americans of all races and creeds. If you would like to help or connect, email me at [email protected]!

Stay healthy, safe and politically engaged!

Warmly,
Saehee Chang
Outreach Coordinator
NCB Chapter, DA Germany

INTERVIEW WITH FORMER CONGRESSMAN BART STUPAK (MI-1)

THURSDAY, APR 22, 2021 at 19:30 via Zoom (RSVP for details)

North & Central Bavaria Chapter Chair Wayne Lempke will interview the former Democratic congressman from Michigan's 1st District, Bart Stupak. Stupak represented this vast rural district as a moderate Democrat from 1993-2011 and was instrumental in forging a compromise for passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), often referred to as Obamacare.

Stupak is the author of For All Americans: The Dramatic Story Behind the Stupak Amendment and the Historic Passage of Obamacare

In addition to learning about Stupak's role in getting the ACA passed and other achievements of his 18 years in Congress, Lempke and Stupak will discuss the shift of this rural Michigan district, which Stupak once won by 40 points, to a district which Trump carried by 20 points. We hope to gain insight into what Democrats can do to win back these rural districts.

This event is presented in cooperation
with the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut in Nürnberg
and the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany.

Due to the pandemic, Tax Day in the USA this year is May 17th. Since most of us still have April 15th in our head, we wanted to draw your attention to some events and resources that Democrats Abroad provides to assist you with the burden of US Taxes:

As we get closer to our tax filing deadline, keep an eye out for other tax-themed events!

Are you interested in advocating for your home state or a state you want to support? Do you want to help improve voting rights for citizens abroad and back home? Would you like to build strong connections to local organizers? Are you concerned about what's going on in state legislatures?

Then come out and learn about the State Outreach Teams project and see how you can get involved!

Several states already have teams forming - we will be introducing initiatives for voters abroad from Texas, Arizona, Georgia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and hope to find volunteers willing to start up groups for other states. We will share strategies and information on how to help keep or turn these states blue and what you can do from Germany. There are many different ways to get involved!
