Signs of Resistance - Host a Poster Making Party

A powerful protest sign doesn’t just share a message—it grabs attention, sparks conversation, and makes an impact. Whether bold, funny, or sharply to the point, homemade signs are magnets for cameras and press coverage. All you need is a piece of cardboard and some markers. Get creative with humor, puns, and iconic phrases to make your message unforgettable. You'll find that creating a poster with a punch doesn't take too much time, and when you're at a rally it's a great way to connect with protesters around you.

Before the meeting:

  • Decide on the protest theme.
  • Gather art supplies:
    • Cardboard boxes, poster board, heavy carton
    • Paint stirrer sticks (great for holding up A3 and smaller posters)
    • Big markers or poster paint
    • Duct tape, scissors, box cutters, paint brushes etc
  • Identify a good spot to meet to make the posters - we recommend a space with lots of light, big tables, and access to water if using paint.
  • Send around ideas for poster messages to your team, ask them to bring ideas to the event, as well as their poster board.
  • Consider making a sample poster ahead of time.

During the meeting:

  • Ask your team to share their poster ideas.
  • Brainstorm more ideas with folk still considering their message.
  • Set out art supplies, extra poster board.
  • Create posters.
  • Admire and share! (Take pictures of the complete set before you go!)

Follow-up:

  • Share your designs across your team's social media channels.
  • Share images of finalized materials with the DA Resistance team ([email protected]) and with DA at @demsabroad to further share the message.
  • When it's time to meet for your protest, remind everyone to bring their posters :-)
