The 2024 Road to Victory in California

The_2024_Road_to_Victory_in_California.png

What happened to the California swing districts in the 2022 midterms? There were victories like Josh Harder (CA-9) and Katie Porter (CA-47), but narrow losses, too, like Adam Gray in CA-13 who lost by only 564 votes. The 2022 midterms made it clear that victories in California’s swing districts will put Congress back in Democratic hands. Our votes from abroad could make the difference.

Please join the Democrats Abroad California State Team on November 8 to hear from Alex Gutierrez, who was there on the ground in California’s 22nd swing district in 2022.  Alex (see biography below)  will share what went right, what didn’t go so well, and what we have to do in 2024.

Plus, you’ll find out what you can do to help us get out the California overseas vote. We need you! Ready to volunteer today?!

Date: Wednesday, November 8th

Time: 8am PDT / 11am EDT/ 5pm CEST

RSVP for the Zoom link!

About Democrats Abroad California State Team

The Democrats Abroad (DA) California State Team aims to inform California voters living abroad about key races in their state and to motivate them to participate in elections. We educate voters on deadlines and electronic ballot options, as well as providing assistance to ensure they can return their ballot. We are the margin of victory in races across the state, especially competitive Congressional districts. In 2021 we helped fight the Republican governor recall and in 2022 we presented online events with all of the swing district candidates. In 2024, with swing districts and an exciting Senate race, we plan to do even more. Join us!

About Alex Gutierrez

Born in Los Angeles, Alex is the son of immigrants from Aguascalientes, México, who came to the United States for a better life. His father labored long hours in the dairy industry of the San Joaquin Valley to support their family, while his mom worked as a housekeeper to finish her education and become a licensed clinical social worker. The eldest of five boys, Alex became politically engaged at a young age due to two major events: the attacks of September 11th, 2001, and the fight for LGBT+ Equality.

To understand the world, he dedicated himself to studying history, politics, and government while building the courage to break free from the self-hate stigma that sinks in while living a closeted life. Wanting to give back and help the many activists who came before him, Alex has spent nearly a decade of involvement in the political landscape by helping elect effective leadership and to inspire the community to get involved in their body politic, especially our Latino population, and it helps that Alex is fluent in Spanish.

During the 2022 midterms, Alex worked for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) as a field organizer for Assemblyman Rudy Salas' Congressional Campaign in California's 22nd District against incumbent Congressman David Valadao. On the campaign, Alex coordinated with various groups and organizations, such as the Bay Area Coalition, to maximize volunteer recruitment, calls, and the ever so important door-to-door canvassing to have "meaningful conversations" with voters. This garnered events of 30-80 volunteers in one of the most competitive campaigns in the country! He strategized key precinct areas in two rural northern counties of CA-22 as well as the logistics for travel, lodging, meals, and candidate surrogates for campaign volunteers.
