GWC June 2023 Newsletter

Letter from the Editors

As the world prepares to embrace the vibrant month of June, the Global Women's Caucus invites you to join us in an exciting celebration that unites two significant movements: Pride Month and Women's Rights. Throughout this empowering month, we will shine a spotlight on the remarkable contributions of LGBTQ+ women and their invaluable role in the fight for gender equality.

Pride Month, a time of joyful commemoration and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, aligns harmoniously with the core principles of the women's rights movement. Throughout June, the Global Women's Caucus will feature inspiring stories of LGBTQ+ women who have made groundbreaking strides in their respective fields, highlighting their resilience, achievements, and ongoing commitment to dismantling societal barriers.

Join us in exploring the rich tapestry of experiences, cultures, and identities that define the LGBTQ+ women's community. Together, we will celebrate their triumphs and support their ongoing struggles, while embracing the interconnectedness of all feminist movements. Together, we can raise awareness, foster inclusivity, and promote a world where every woman, regardless of her sexual orientation, can thrive and be celebrated for her authentic self.

This June, let us honor the invaluable contributions of LGBTQ+ women, amplifying their voices and ensuring that their rights and experiences remain at the forefront of our collective consciousness. Together, we will continue to pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future where love, equality, and empowerment know no bounds.

In solidarity,

GWC ACTION TEAM UPDATES

Global Women's Caucus presenting Resolution "Federal Legislation to Protect Women's Rights"
Leaders of the Global Women's Caucus have submitted a comprehensive resolution addressing current attacks on the rights of women (Resolution #12) for consideration at the Global AGM in Washington, DC on June 10-11th. Prior to the meeting, members of the Caucus will be visiting legislators and highighting these issues. The resolution speaks to the ERA; the inequalities and challenges of wage disparities; childcare and elder care burdens; reproductive justice; healthcare accessibility; gender-based violence and more. It includes recommendations for action and has been recommended by the Resolution Committee for passage by Acclamation.
Here is a link to our Resolution.

From the Reproductive Justice Team to all Florida voters: URGENT ACTION NEEDED

Florida’s Planned Parenthood and other  right to choose activists have launched a campaign to get abortion on the ballot in Florida.  They have proposed an amendment by petition to modify the Florida constitution to validate abortion up to the viability of the fetus (around 24 weeks).

To get the petition on the ballot, the campaign needs 900 000 signatures before December, 2023 to get on the ballot for November, 2024. If you vote in Florida, print the petition here.

WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT BOOKS ABROAD, OUR GLOBAL WOMEN’S CAUCUS BOOK GROUP?

Let us count the ways!

Our feminist reading group focuses on subjects relevant to Democrats Abroad women to better understand the experiences, the issues, the problems and the solutions of women in the world, past, present and future. The ensuing discussions are multifaceted, literary, political, anecdotal, personal - and allow all kinds of opinions and feelings and reactions to come to the fore. Don’t worry if you haven’t had time to read or to finish the book. You can still tune in to the discussion and share the conversation. Because in one way or another it’s about you.

To learn more about who we are, books we’ve read and discussed, and how you too can participate, go to our Books Abroad blog space. The next meeting will be in September, and we think we’ll be reading Good Girls by Hadley Freeman. The announcement will be coming soon.

Artist Corner

In honor of Pride Month this June, we are proud to spotlight Zanele Muholi, an internationally acclaimed South African artist and self-described visual activist. Muholi's evocative photography and multi-media work centers around the lived experiences of black lesbian, gay, transgender, and intersex communities in South Africa, offering an intimate and powerful window into their struggles and triumphs. Through their art, Muholi not only challenges the stigma and discrimination faced by these communities but also reclaims their narrative, highlighting their resilience, strength, and identity. Their unflinching commitment to visibility, representation, and human rights embodies the values we uphold in our Global Women's Caucus. This month, as we celebrate both the diversity of womanhood and the spectrum of identities in the LGBTQ+ community, we honor Zanele Muholi's vital contribution to this global dialogue.
