Last Thursday February 22, 2024, Democrats Abroad Luxembourg (DAL) hosted an evening with Thomas Barrett, the American Ambassador to Luxembourg, former Congressman from the State of Wisconsin (1993 – 2003) and former Mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (2004-2021).
The evening started with questions posed by LaTasha Baker, the moderator. This led into an explanation of how he ended up in Luxembourg as the American Ambassador. He mentioned that he was always involved in local politics, but this move to Luxembourg set him on the international stage. He was responsible for planning the 2020 Democratic Presidential Convention in Milwaukee that was unfortunately cancelled as a result of Covid. Despite this setback, his efforts in the organization of the Convention caught the attention of President Biden and he was selected for an ambassador post in Luxembourg.
Ambassador Barrett emphasized that he was a political appointee, as opposed to a career diplomatic officer of the State Department. He also emphasized that as member of the State Department he represented all Americans, and his party affiliation did not play any role in his position as Ambassador.
The event wrapped up with several questions from the audience covering his personal life and experiences and how he spends his free time in Luxembourg, as well as questions about the relationship and trade between Luxembourg and the US. The event was appreciated by the audience, and everyone had an opportunity to speak personally with the Ambassador.
