Tax Talk and Chapter Elections
It's tax time again, and as US citizens living abroad, we again find ourselves in the unpleasant situation of having to file US income tax returns on our worldwide income (the USA is one of only two countries on the planet with this requirement, the other being Eritrea). Thankfully, Pierre Taponier, an experienced, dual US/French tax attorney, will give us a Tax Talk in Lyon on March 23rd from 3:00 to 4:30 PM, including a question and answer period.(1)
Proposed subjects include:
- Recent changes in US and French tax laws
- Filing requirements (Do I need to file?)
- "Non-resident alien" spouse - Head of Household, Joint, or Separate return?
- Important dates
- Avoiding double taxation
The tax talk will be immediately followed by Lyon chapter elections. The afternoon's agenda will be as follows:
2:30 - 3:00pm: Registration
3:00 - 4:00pm: Expert Tax Attorney Talk
Americans living abroad are generally required to file a US income tax return, which can be a daunting task, especially the first time through. The tax law changes passed last year raise even more questions. Thankfully, help is coming. Pierre Taponier, an experienced dual French - US tax attorney will be coming from Paris to give a presentation and answer questions.
4:00 - 4:30pm: Q & A
4:30 - 5:00pm: Lyon Leadership Committee Elections
Elections for our local chapter of Democrats Abroad will be held after the tax talk. Candidates will present themselves and members will have the opportunity to vote if they have not already done so by electronic ballot. (2)
(1) Places are limited for the Tax Talk. In order to reserve your place, we ask that you click below on "Purchase Tickets." Suggested donation for DA members is 15€, for non-members 25€. All donations will go to cover the cost of this event and to fund DALyon activities throughout the year.
(2) No reservation is necessary for attendance at election event.
