Summer is finally here, and that means it's vacation time! Democrats Abroad Muenster will be taking a break this August, but we will return in full force in September! We have quite a few events planned, which will hopefully be able to take place in person. We are planning for that at the moment, but as we approach the events, we will evaluate the current situation and decide whether it’s possible to meet in person or not. Read the rest of our newsletter to see what events we have in store and ways you can get involved this summer!

Although we may be taking a few weeks off, that doesn't mean you can't get active! For anyone who wants to use this time off to get involved, the State Outreach Groups are for you! Democrats Abroad has spearheaded a campaign to allow people like us who live abroad to engage in politics on a state level. There are currently a limited number of groups, however more are being started regularly (and perhaps you could be the one to start a group for your state!). Follow the link here to learn more about the groups and sign up for an event to get started.

Additionally, our chapter has found another way to get involved on a state level. Leading up to the 2020 election, we began writing targeted letters for Vote Forward. They are launching a new campaign to reach Virginia voters, and we will once again be writing letters. You can sign up on the site at any time, but if you would like to meet in person to write letters, we ask you to complete this survey with a time that works for you. We will offer one or two meeting times between August and September. We will contact those who signed up when the date is set. For more information on Vote Forward, please follow this link.

CSD Parade/Demo

When: Saturday, August 28th, time TBD

CSD will not be occurring the same way it has in the past. Only the parade portion of the event will take place this year. We would like to march in the parade if a group is interested in participating. We ask you to complete this form if you are interested in marching. We will contact you with more information when we have it.

Monthly Meeting + Labor Day Picnic

When: Saturday, September 4th at 1pm

Where: Schlosspark, MS

RSVP: Website

Description: Join us for our first in-person meeting of 2021! We will gather to celebrate Labor Day and discuss the most pressing issues facing Democrats at the moment. We will be grilling, so we ask everyone attending to bring something to grill, drinks, and a side to share with others. We also ask everyone to do a rapid test before arrival (even those who have been vaccinated).

**The plan is currently to meet in person. However, this is subject to change depending on how the situation continues to develop. We will contact you before the event to confirm the location.

If you RSVP over the website, please note that the time zone is incorrect (my bad!). We are meeting at 1pm our time, not EST.

Quarterly Book Club

When: Thursday, September 9th at 7pm

Where: TBD

RSVP: Website

Book/Description: With residential schools suddenly making their way into mainstream media, we would like to dedicate this quarter’s book club to a book on the topic. We will be reading The Education of Augie Merasty: A Residential School Memoir. This short but hopefully insightful read will give us the change to learn more about this topic and allow us to springboard into a discussion on the US’ history with Native Americans and how this relates to the present.

**The plan is currently to meet in person. However, this is subject to change depending on how the situation continues to develop. We will contact you before the event to confirm the location.

I hope you have a safe, healthy, and most importantly relaxing summer vacation!

Sincerely,

Katie Bathgate, Chair
