Cross-Border Investing Strategy

When it comes to investing, often there are a lot of decisions to make.  When you're an American living in Canada, these decisions are further complicated by needing to deal with two separate systems of taxation.  How will the IRS look at your tax-sheltered Canadian investments?  What are some tried-and-true strategies towards investing for your retirement?
