Join us for a powerful documentary screening of Churchill: Britain’s Secret Apartheid, followed by a discussion about this little-known chapter of World War II history and its lasting implications.
In 1942, as part of the Allied effort to defeat Hitler, Winston Churchill allowed the United States to bring its racially segregated military to Britain. What followed was a clash of cultures as Black American GIs encountered both the entrenched racism of the U.S. military and the unexpected solidarity of ordinary British citizens who rejected the white soldiers’ segregationist attitudes.
Through the lens of award-winning writer Nadifa Mohamed, this film uncovers how the U.S. exported its Jim Crow system overseas—and how British communities responded with humanity and resistance.
After the screening, we’ll hold a group discussion to reflect on the film’s themes of race, war, and solidarity, and to connect them to present-day struggles for equality and justice.
