What a perfect city to celebrate World Pride! It’s The Netherlands’ 25th anniversary of gay marriage, and pride parade has been an unforgettable event in the center of Amsterdam for 20 years.
Democrats Abroad was there to kick it off in July where the Dutch Queen Maxima gave a speech at the opening ceremony on July 25th in Vondelpark, and of course Democrats Abroad was at the World Pride Parade on August 1st. It was a great experience: perfect location, great weather, good company and dazzling boats; even Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten made an appearance to watch!
Stacey Lentz, LGBT activist and co-owner of the Stonewall Inn, said after her visit:
“Pride in Amsterdam is incredible and epic — nothing I’ve ever seen compares. The whole city celebrates that you can be who you are. Trans, Bi, Lesbian, Gay, together with straight people, whatever your identity … everyone joins in … everyone celebrates diversity. Pride truly takes over the entire city here! The message is really about inclusion and you can feel why this was the first country to introduce marriage for people of the same sex and why it is a frontrunner in human rights!”

Many thanks to The Netherlands Democrats Abroad Vice Chair Tre’Shawn Griffin-Noordermeer for always doing such an outstanding job spearheading the Amsterdam Pride events for DA, and thanks for everyone in the caucus who helped out!
