Athletes not ICE: DA Statement on 2026 Winter Olympics

Next week, the United States will send a delegation of 232 athletes, the largest Winter Olympic team in U.S. history, to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, Italy.

This should be a joyous moment, as the Olympic Games are about global unity through sports. For the competitors, this is a culminating moment in their athletic careers and we will be cheering them on.

However, these Olympics come as the Trump regime is terrorizing people in America and around the world. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with the full support of the White House, is disappearing legal immigrants and US citizens  and tearing families apart. The lawless conduct of the Trump regime has led to the murder of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and numerous others, at the hands of federal agents and while in federal custody.

Announcing that they are bringing agents from ICE to provide security at the Olympics is giving the middle finger to Americans and people all over the world and making it harder for Team USA to compete and be welcomed.

As we proudly and loudly support our Olympic team, we equally loudly protest what ICE is doing to people and communities throughout America.  Our support for Team USA does not negate our need to speak out against policies that undermine human dignity and the principles of democracy - indeed they stem from the same source.

The Olympics are about global unity. The Trump regime stands for the opposite - dividing Americans against each other and dividing America from the rest of the world.

As Americans abroad we are ambassadors for the USA every single day, and we won’t stand for it. From Minneapolis to Milan, we say ICE OUT!
