Beyond the Ballot: Issues that Shape Our Communities — Healthcare
Join the Global Black Caucus GOTV Team for the first installment of our "Beyond the Ballot" series, exploring the issues that shape our communities and our vote. This session tackles healthcare — from the affordability crisis unfolding as enhanced ACA premium tax credits expire, to the crisis in Black maternal health.
We'll look at what's actually happening: nationwide Marketplace enrollment dropped 12% after federal subsidies expired, but New Mexico bucked the trend by replacing them at the state level — a case study in what states can choose to do. We'll also confront the data on Black maternal mortality, more than triple the rate for white women, and examine how states like New Jersey have responded with policy (expanded postpartum Medicaid, doula coverage, home visiting) even as disparities persist.
This is an interactive session — polls, chat discussion, and a chance to identify the healthcare question that matters most to you on your own ballot. We'll close by connecting the issue directly to action: registering and voting from abroad via VoteFromAbroad.org.
