On 12 May, David Pereira, director of Amnesty International Luxembourg, spoke to members of Democrats Abroad Luxembourg about the growing challenges facing human rights and democratic institutions around the world. Pereira emphasized that Amnesty International remains a non-political organization focused on defending human rights for everyone, regardless of ideology or nationality, while warning about what he described as a worrying global slide toward authoritarianism.
During the discussion, Pereira criticized the treatment of migrants and asylum seekers in the United States and expressed concern about policies and rhetoric associated with Donald Trump, while also noting that democratic backsliding is taking place in many countries across the world. He repeatedly stressed the importance of caring, solidarity, and protecting the dignity of vulnerable people. After the talk, Pereira stayed to share a meal with attendees and took part in an extended question-and-answer session with members.
